How Windows Mobile 5 gets developed

The Windows Mobile Team Blog is a great resource, I’ve found it very useful on occasion to get a glimpse into the developers mind.
In his “I’m just a feature” article, Mike Calligero explains what it takes for a feature request to get into a new Windows Mobile 5 build.

[If you are interested in knowing more about software development, head over to Joels site for lots of great, well-written articles on what a programmer needs to do to get a program released and get it stable]
It’s an eye-opener for those users who have never known or realised what it takes for an improvement or feature request to get through the build proces of a major application that is released in 25 languages and to millions of users.

Belgische Pedofielen op zoek naar kind foto's.

(for the english readers : the below is a rant on Belgian pedophiles who hunt down all images of children in bathing suits or naked in bath, etc… and the reason why I already removed some images of my sons from my site as I got suspicious of the high page visits to a 1-year old post)

Anaconda WordPress theme

Hold on to your eyes, ladies and gentlemen – I am trying out a new theme called Anaconda, and it rocks !! Loads of things to muck about with.

For the next few days, ouch ! Although soonish I’ll be settling back down to normal, don’t ya worry.

The installation of the theme went surprisingly easy – just unzip the file under your WordPress theme directory and you’re good to go. If you want to have some widget fun, install that one too (the unzipped directory goes into the WordPress plugins directory).

Update :
This is a really flexible theme – I just activated the plugin section, and I have succesfully configured my new left-sidebar just the way I like it. Anaconda is still in beta, currently at version 0.7 but it seems stable enough. A bit slower on loading the page though.
I think I am going to keep this theme, although I might need to do some tinkering, but I have to say it is the best theme I’ve come across so far !

What I am currently missing is a simple way to change the color of the theme’s titles and put my custom picture on top…

PSP Firmware 2.71 Downgrader

Well, as most every psp site is reporting, it’s (un)official and I can confirm it works : using a libtiff exploit (meaning that a psp picture library program that deals with how to display ‘tiff’ image files is not dealing correctly with certain types of tiff files) you can now downgrade your Sony psp from firmware 2.71 to 1.50.

Please note that you HAVE to have firmware 2.71 – I tried literally dozens of times with 2.70 and it did not work. Once I upgraded to 2.71 however (you can still find it on the net if you look hard enough) the downgrade happened after about the third time I tried.

If you then install DevHook again (on your 1.50 firmware) you gain (again) the ability to play the latest games, as DevHook will run firmware 2.71 from a dump on your memory stick !

Cool ! I am gonna explore Homebrew again a bit, seems like there has been a lot of advancement since I last checked, almost 8 months ago or so.

The power of Tie

Recently, I’ve done a small experiment : I started wearing a tie to work again.

I don’t have to wear ties or jackets to work, as I don’t meet a lot of customers. However quite a few people here do ties and jackets and suits – and the higher you are in hierachy, the more it is expected.

Here, it seems that if you are really serious about your career, then you wear a suit to work every day.

I’ve always had my doubts about the efficacy of this, certainly after wearing a suit to work for the first 7 years or so of my working life. Having to mandatorely put a suit on really made me dislike wearing them. Plus, in my previous work everybody wore a suit, so the effect seemed nullified.

Now that I am in a company where it is by choice, I actually want to wear one from time to time. So the impact should be greater. So after many years of going tie-less, once more I am wearing a tie and occasionally a jacket.

The results are in : after a week, the difference is surprising. The tie and jacket do make a difference in the way people regard you, I even get nods from people who normally pass me by. It’s not like I am doing different work, but you definitely get more respect.
So there is definitely truth in the saying “The Clothes Make the Man”… or at least, they do in the eye of the beholder.

2-port KVM switch

Belkin SwitchI have needed a KVM switch (Keyboard, Video, Monitor switch) for some time now, as it has become bothersome to switch between my pc and my mac every time.

Sure, I did install ultra-vnc on my pc, so I could fire up Chicken of VNC and get to my pc using my Mac’s screen and use it for simple tasks like Active Sync and Word processing, and it does that Very Well.
But it doesn’t show very good video and it goes haywire when you want play games, even simple ones. And my son is asking more and more to play a game on our pc so I am spending more and more time switching cables.

So I set out to find a solution that was compatible with mac and pc. As previously mentioned, I already looked a solution made by Belkin, but at the time it wasn’t out yet.

This time it was available, but not the specific mac-intel version.

I could either buy a Switch2 solution that fit under the mac mini, with no sound replication and which costs more than 110 € in the Fnac (although you can find it online lots cheaper), or I could buy the regular Belkin 2-port KVM Swith, with built-in Audio sharing (F1DL102Uea) and a max resolution of 2048×1536 for about 65 €.

After lots of comparing and running between the two product stands, I chose the latter, because
a) it was cheaper and
b) it included audio as well
It also claimed compatibility with Mac OS X. And while Belking makes a lot of noise about their latest Switch2 version for mac to be the only one that can deal with a Mac keyboard, this version has no problems with it as well – when I switch to my Windows XP, my Apple keys become Windows keys, and vice versa.

So, this solves my switch problems. All I need now is a new pc.

I’ve been mulling about buying a new iMac with built-in screen, but with lots of extra costs on our house coming up, the cheaper solution will be to continue using my mac mini and buying a new, higher performance pc. For about 1000 € you can get a more than reasonable top-of-the-line pc while a similar iMac with same memory costs close to double (of course, the screen is not included in the regular pc, but nowadays the price difference shouldn’t be that big).

Hmm. I’ll wait a bit more, see if there are any new updates to the iMac line that make it worthwhile to choose it.

What is a manager ?

I’m reading the Hackers Diet, and apart from being a free online weight loss book, it’s also chockfull of references and insights to other issues, some of which are pretty usefull for everybody.

Coming from one of the founders of Autodesk (John Walker) this is not suprising. The man has oodles and bags full of experience in managing a company and the people in it to share.

I just had to share this particular insight with you which is in the section “Managing Problems” :

The world of the manager is one of problems and opportunities. Problems are to be managed; one must understand the nature of the problem, amass resources adequate to deal with it, and “work the problem” on an ongoing basis. Opportunities are merely problems that promise to pay off after sufficient work.

Aaaah. A Good Definition, methinks. He continues though, stating that a manager does not fix a problem… Solving a problem requires a mix of both managing and fixing it.

Qtips update : TodayTime & Eten Dialer

Updated my Qtips page with some new links to the TodayTime plugin, which reduces the time and date to one line instead of two lines.

I’ve also just installed the Eten Dialer (using the O2 skin which has both portrait and landscape mode and works wirth SmartDial), which features bigger buttons, this is a nice improvement. I must have big hands, cause I find even these buttons a wee bit small.

Nice improvement, now let’s see if they are stable…

Sam and Tom update

Sam is running around now, faster and faster. When he is running in your direction and he sees you he laughs, and then runs the other way ! He can be VERY fast.
During the last 2 weeks or so, with us repeating the motions in front of him all the time, he has learned to point his hand and finger to something he wants, and since a few days he says ‘aa’ (stand for ‘ja’ or yes) when we ask him if this is the thing he wants.

He seems to reflect on stuff he has learned and then re-using it when we least expect it. He loves opening and closing doors. Especially closing them, always repeating ‘deutoe’ (aka ‘deur toe’ aka close the door).

All this while he is 14 months old !

Tom is going bikeriding. Yesterday we went for a walk in Hallerbos, the woods nearby. No cars allowed during weekends, broad roads, so excellent for Tom and his little bike. Still on side-wheels, but that will change in the future. For now he has to learn to have fun on his bike, which he anyways prefers vastly to walking.

He was very brave, and for the chance of getting a pancake at ‘Het Kriekske’ (they didn’t have any, but he had a nice real-raspberry ice-cream instead) he biked for 2.5 hours through the woods. Both he and Sam slept very well !

Wheeee ! PDAMobiz.com

Funny thing, that. You have a blog that you’re absolutely, positively certain you’re only writing for yourself and your own progeny (even if it is doubtfull my children – once they can read – are interested in what their dad did and wrote all those long years ago) and suddenly while looking through those stats, you find people referring to your blog.

It’s a weird feeling, I’ll tell you. It’s supposed to work this way, except I never quite expected it.

But it seems my Windows Mobile 5 tips and tricks post is getting a lot of referrals. Even made it to the frontpage of PDAMobiz.com, which is a thai (?) site about PDAs.
Time to start setting up Adsense ? I doubt it, the number of visits are still small, but who knows, who knows indeed ?

For posterity, and in case this only happened by a fluke, I’ve made a screenshot of their homepage and cropped it a bit to show the relevant link.

Basking in glory, that’s how I feel. 🙂
