Tales of Eternia update.

Whenever I have some spare time I have been playing Tales of Eternia on my PSP. A small review seems to have appeared in my head, structured as this :

GamePlay in general
The story, while very corny and often just plain strange, is actually quite good, with some twists and surprises, and I keep having this feeling that there is more going on behind the scenes, something I usually don’t have nowadays, being old and wise and having seen it all ofcourse… At the start everything is very goody doody, nobody dies. There is even this mystery cook that hides in different forms of furniture and teaches you different recipes. These recipes can then be used to regain health or cure yourself, provided you have the right ingredients.

But play on, and a bit further on in the game you come back to a village where all the people are lying dead in the streets, and you realise that there is a (smallish) bite to this story. There is even a small mini-game that will psych-profile you – you respond to a loooong list of questions and it will tell you to which Craymel (god-like beings that your party must collect to save the world) you relate the most to.

Battle System
The battle system can be annoying when you just want to explore, as it keeps on generating random encounters, mostly starting them when you don’t want to. After a while though, you just wack through them.
Sometimes these battles can be a bit hard, but with some adjusting of your characters and their equipment you can go a long way. For example, from time to time when you win a battle you collect amulets with different properties (healing, or 10% extra strength, or 10% protection from damage). Sometimes they only protect against ice or fire or earth, and you have to equip them when you are facing the enemy that is vulnerable against them.

So there is actually a small amount of tactics involved, selecting different weapons/amulets/skills against different enemies.

But it is BORING in the extreme fighting the same beasts and animals time and time again.

Graphics
No 3D except for some mini games and the map. Most of the story happens in towns in 2D, but o boy, I really like the 2D drawings here (and luckely, most of the games plays there).
The whole scene looks like it came out of a story book picture, and to my eye seems anti-aliased, at least enough to get a very smooth look. Animations are provided for most things, and you can really notice the attention to detail that pervades the whole game. Fires flicker and burn, mirrors reflect, water moves, lights twinkle…
The 3D parts come to play when you wander around the map between the different towns. This is in a Crappy3D(tm) format that really detracts from wandering around, you get the feeling that this was bolted on somehow. Some mini-games also come in 3D, like controlling a speeding train, and are executed much better.

System Integration
Saving and loading goes very quickly. One niggle. If you are fast enough and just tap the buttons without looking, it can happen that you mispress and instead of saving, you actually delete a save game. It happened to me several times before I caught on, so now I take my time saving, and I random save between 5 different positions (I always saved the most recent at the top, but that was also the one I deleted the most !).

Turning off your psp stores the game, and it restores actually pretty quickly. However, when you get the graphics, best to wait a few seconds for the umd to start whirring, no gaps then.

Overall Score : 8/10
This is a great game for the PSP, giving you lots of hours to play, it can be put aside and picked up again as needed. Recommended for the casual RPG gamer (RPG as defined by consoles !). I’m giving it only an 8 as I’m sure that there will be better games in the future…

Sam is growing quickly

Quick update on the family.

We’ve had the last few days off and have been doing an impromptu spring cleaning as well as visiting Paradisio, much to the delight of Tom who insisted we see the aquarium twice !

Sam is getting to be a strong boy. Only just 11 months he already has 6 teeth plus the showings of two others. Crawling is for babies, so he prefers standing up and shouting his joy at the world. Lately he’s been walking around the table keeping in contact with one hand all the time. He’s certaily a happy baby.
Soon he’ll be walking around, so we’ll have to start putting all the small things away out of reach.

Tom is growing fine, although he has problems with his flat feet. He wears soles, and after a day of playing wakes up at night with nagging pain in his feet. Hopefully it is just growing pains and it will pass. He has suffered two or three heavy colds and probably a bit of the flue, and at the moment is easely tired. We got him his first bike recently, and he favors that above walking.

Getting your own bladder.

A collegue of mine has an extremely happy 2-year old son.

Not anything special to write about you would say, except that this child was born with some hip problems that created more problems, including having several operations when still a baby.

To correct these hip problems his legs were operated to point right-angles outward (like this : _|_ ) and this for several months. As a result of these operations, his bladder was damaged/reconstructed, so he can no longer use the normal way to pee.

So I’m very happy for my very brave collegue and her very brave and happy child that this might be a option for him. I hope with all my heart (because I’m a big softy when it comes to kids and their ailments) that it will help him to lead an (even more) normal life !
Life sometimes gets this rosy glow…

It's here ! Running other OS'es in Mac !

The first product is announced that will let you run other operating systems like Windows XP or Linux inside Mac OS X intel-based machines.

Meanwhile, Apple launches Bootcamp beta, a software solution that will allow you to dual-boot Windows XP and Mac OS X on your macintel.

Ow… I don’t have an intel-based mac – yet.

Flip – share monitor, keyboard, mouse (and audio) between 2 computers

Belkin Flip Usage

This is what I want. From what I heard it should be available somewhere during April 2006 for around 60 euros.

Currently I am using an old serial kit to switch my screen between my pc and my mac mini. Since the mac is fully usb I have a seperate keyboard and mouse and it is a hassle with all the wires on my desk.

Going Bedouin

Going Bedouin is the latest way of doing business being discussed.

Small.
Flexible.
Being in constant communication with each other.

I think it’ll work for small companies, but not if you have a 1000 people working for you – unless you can divide them up in their own sub-company.

Accelerando – a free e-book from Charles Stross

Just a quick heads-up to let you know of the existence of a free new e-book from the very good SF author Charles Stross. He has just released Accelerando as a free download.

The book is available in the shops as well, but Charles believes that all the people who download it will be feeling cramped reading it on a screen, and will go out an buy the book. Plus tell their friends and collegues about it (hey! That’s what I’m doing !).

Windows Mobile 5 tricks & tips

I’m going to collect some tips and tricks from other websites for managing my Windows Mobile 5 on my HP Ipaq, since it’s consistently slowwwwww.

Standard Disclaimer : Please note that, should you want to try them out, you do this at your own risk and your results may vary.

Update : for the Qtek 9100 (Wizard, MDA Vario, SPV 3000) : see my Qtips page.

We start with moving some mail and files out of the way :
Fred Pullens Blog : Low on Windows Mobile Memory? Fear Not

1. To move email onto your memory card (SEE WARNING BELOW), do the following:

Create these directories:

\Storage Card\Mail
\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments

In HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\MAPI, create the following STRING entries:

AttachPath = "\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments" (without the quotes)
PropertyPath = "\Storage Card\Mail" (ditto)

2. To move your Internet Explorer settings onto the card, do the following:

Create these directories:

\Storage Card\IECache\Temporary Internet Files
\Storage Card\IECache\Cookies
\Storage Card\IECache\History

EDIT : Do not use the Temp folder on your storage card, this seems to get locked from time to time, which means your ppc starts to use the default storage aka your main memory.

In HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders, edit the existing three registry entries (pointing \Windows\Profiles\guest\…) to match the folders you just created.

Note that if your card is named “SD Card”, like mine was, you need to adapt those entries in the registry.

3. You can move some other files like Pocket Informant also out of the way. A utility like MemMaid can also do this, provided it knows about the application. Very usefull !

In some other sites, there is talk about the filesys.exe using an inordinate amount of CPU, thus slowing down the pocket pc. Here is a thread on a microsoft msdn blog that discusses why filesys does what it does and why you need to put as much as possible on your storage card. Interesting !

Set ActiveSync to manual activation :

  • Launch ActiveSync on your pocket pc
  • Choose Menu, Add Server Source
  • Input ‘something’ for the server address
  • Next
  • Again, fill something in (whatever you want) for Username, Password and Domain
  • Make sure that every field is filled in
  • Next
  • Finish
  • Now, do Menu, Schedule
  • Set both Peak times & Off-peak times to Manually
  • OK
  • Do Menu, Options
  • Select Exchange Server and delete it thus removing the settings you have just entered
  • OK to exit

You can tune your own cache level :

* Boost Windows Mobile 5 performance up to 20 percent

[HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS]
CacheSize = 0x1FA0 (8096)

EnableCache = 0x1 (1)

[HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt]
ReplStoreCacheSize = 0x1FA0 (8096)

* The following entry does not exist – you need to create two new DWORDS here

[HKLM\System\StorageManager\Profiles\MSFlash\FATFS\]
DataCacheSize=0x1FA0 (8096)
Flags=0x28 (40)

* Boost your icon cache – this used to be 8192

[HKLM\System\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\limit=0x8000 (32768)

* Soft reset for changes to take effect. Default values for all keys are 0

Update :

  • there’s a ROM update for the HP iPaq hx2000 series
  • Why Flushing the memory is important
  • Filesys.exe throttler for the hx2xxx models (try each one until one works, then copy that one to the startup folder

CardSystems Solutions have gone away (not)

Dear reader (whoever that lone soul may be),

Remember my ranting about CardSystems Solutions ? The credit card processing company that, due to gross incompetence, managed to make 40 million credit card numbers and their details available on the net ?

Seems that the fat lady sang and the sigar was smoked after all – when you check their website out, the only text you can see is that the assets of CSS have been bought by ‘Pay By Touch Payment Solutions’.

Pay By Touch is the global leader of biometric authentication, loyalty, membership, and payment solutions. The privately held company is dedicated to being the preeminent global authentication and payments network, providing the most secure, convenient, and cost-effective electronic transaction solutions for businesses and consumers around the world.

So CardSystems is a goner, no longer to be seen. Or is it ?

When you click on the link on the CSS website, you are redirected to a new website : Pay By Touch Payment Solutions. There you can read the news section, including a press release dated december 9, 2005, where PBT has bought over CCS (for stock and some cash.

Since it’s a press release, I’ve been so bold as to quote it here almost entirely.
Notice the subtitle ! Underlined parts are added by me.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PAY BY TOUCH COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF CARDSYSTEMS SOLUTIONS
Pay By Touch payment processing products to become more robust

SAN FRANCISCO – (December 9, 2005) –Pay By Touch TM, the leading provider of biometric authentication, loyalty, membership, and payment solutions, today announced it has completed the acquisition of substantially all the assets of CardSystems Solutions, Inc., a leading end-to-end payment processing provider with approximately 120,000 merchants to which Pay By Touch will have immediate access.

To complement the acquisition, Pay By Touch also announced that several industry-leading executives from CardSystems have been appointed to lead Pay By Touch Payment Solutions, a newly named business unit with responsibility for the Pay By Touch payment-processing unit (formerly known as iPAY) and the new
CardSystems assets.

“CardSystems’ assets complement Pay By Touch’s existing payment-related products and services and provide a ready-made path to reaching more merchants and banks to further realize our vision to change the way the world pays,” said John Rogers, founder, chairman and CEO of Pay By Touch. “To that end, the acquisition
allows us to provide a richer and more comprehensive suite of end-to-end payment processing solutions.”

Under the terms of the deal, Pay By Touch will assume responsibility for all CardSystems Solutions, Inc. assets and for payment relationships with 120,000 small and medium-sized merchants. The deal was completed primarily for stock and some cash. CardSystems provides integrated payment solutions to associations,
financial institutions and independent sales organizations (ISOs), and retail merchants. Through these payment solutions, CardSystems processes more than $18 billion in Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, online debit, and EBT transactions annually.

So if I understand their press release correctly, the beast lives on. Not just the feet and the body, but lots of the braincells have been recuperated as well – it just received a new name, that’s all.

I hope that Pay By Touch has the sense to do thorough security checks at irregular intervals and make certain that their new business unit has a tad more security added to it’s system than the previous incarnation.
And that they are honest enough to cough up to the fact if or when something happens…

2 new PSP titles added : GTA & Steamboy

Thursday I added 2 new PSP titles to my collection, the game ‘GTA : Liberty Stories’ and an UMD movie called ‘Steamboy’, both bought second-hand in a specialty shop in Leuven.

I’ve heard enough good things from GTA not to pick it up for 35 euros (5 euros more expensive than on eBay) and when I saw the semi-new movie ‘Steamboy’ on sale for 10 euros, I picked that up as well. And truth to tell, I bought GTA also for it’s collector value; it’s the game you need with firmware 2.50 that allows you to run homebrew software via a savegame corruption. I reckon in the next few months or years it’ll be sought after, as I think Sony will be more vigilant than ever in checking any titles coming out for it’s platform.

My PSP collection is growing larger than anticipated. Strangely enough I play mostly one game, Tales of Eternia, I haven’t even started watching the steamboy movie. I don’t think it is greed from my part as much as it is thinking ahead. I can imagine several things I might be doing (a long train ride, vacation time) where I wouldn’t mind watching a movie or playing a game. It’s for those days I’m buying these games and now a movie.

At least, that’s what I tell myself…
