ScummVM on the iPhone ! Yaarrrrrr Me Maties !!!

At last, I just knew that somebody had to have done something about this lack of scummvm on the new platform. Even one of the original creators of Monkey Island was waiting for it…

In case you are younger than 25 or so, scummvm is a game engine emulator for the very first point-n-click adventures like ‘The Secret of Monkey Island‘ and other such ones which were hugely popular in my youth. Their 16 bit colour version would seem quaint to you now, but squashed on a small mobile phone screen this and other games are a thing of beauty you can while your time away with while travelling !

Check out the instructions on the scummvm wiki here to get some Scummy goodness on your iphone. Don’t forget to place the games on your Media space !

Moving the Applications folder on your iphone to /var/root (sequel)

I previously wrote about moving your /Applications folder to your media partition, and suggested that you could probably move individual application to your /var/root instead of the whole kaboodle.

But I’ve just experimented some, and it’s a fairly big hassle to do this for each application you want to do this for. Plus what happens when an update is available ? My guess is the whole directory is replaced, possibly destroying the symlink and installing it once more into your original Applications directory. I didn’t try to find out, though. I only had 3 megs left on my root partition, time to take action.

So I finally moved the whole directory to /var/root, the biiiig partition where you get lots of diskspace. I did try a variation though, by leaving a vestigial, thoroughly cleaned out /Applications directory instead of deleting it, but the symbolic link creation failed because the file already existed. I figured if ever anything went wrong with the moved /Applications folder, I would have still had the original one. But this does not work, so I’ve followed the original instructions, removed my /Applications directory and created the symbolic link to the new one in one go. Everything works fine after a reboot !

I was hoping for what I did when I was using Gentoo, but that was actually more playing around with mounting partitions. When working with partitions, you can have a folder with content in it, and then you can mount another partition using the folder as link point. When the partition is mounted, the original folder contents are no longer accessible. But when you unmount the partition, the original folder contents become accessible again !

How spammers defeat captchas

Captchas were (and probably still are for the moment) a good way to defeat automated spammers.

They are those deformed letters and numbers that you, as a human, can still recognise and type in, but which a computer program cannot because they do not correspond to the letters they know and the slanting changes randomly. They are used on websites for everything for posting comments to blog to signing up for new accounts.
But now hackers, ever inventive, have found a way around this. In this bbc news article is told that hackers are using human (ahum ‘male’) fascination for nakkid women to a new level. For every layer of clothing that gets removed you need to respond to a captcha. And the thing is, these captchas are dynamically retrieved from other websites, where the response to these captchas is used to post spam comment or using a program to auto-signup for a new account !

Very clever ! We’ll have to find a new way or a new variation on captchas.

Assassins Creed

Ouch ! The only game where I feel a twinge in my guts from my fear of heights acting up.

Very good story, so far, leaving you lots of liberties on how you want to play it through…

So I just took a look at my traffic stats – since the beginning of this week, they’ve more than doubled ! From 62 unique visits to 128 !!

The search string most used to come here is apparantly “iphone” and “iphone out of diskspace” closely followed by “iphone sms crash”.

Well, I hope the information here helps you, drop me a comment here on one of the iphone entries if there is  anything you want to talk about.

Fable versus Assassins Creed

I had bought Fable second-hand on Ebay – the original xbox version, since I had heard a lot of things about it. So I just put in the disc to verify that it was okay, just for a few minutes, and then I would go back to playing Assassins Creed.

That was an hour and a half ago. Fable is captivating, full of plot changes and the music, aah the music is especially sublime. It really feels like you are playing a movie. A predictable one, at first, as the begin story faintly reeks of the first few minutes of Conan The Barbarian.

Even though Assassins Creed graphics are way more beautiful, Fable manages to deliver a story, and you can appreciate the care to details that has gone into this game.

I just wanted to express my experience here : that good games can have good graphics, but that it is secondary to their value as a game.

Connect your xbox 360 to your iMac using Elgato Eye Hybrid

I’ve recently acquired an xbox 360 when MediaMarkt did a clearance sale on a particular package deal. 299 € is a very nice price for an xbox with a 20 gig hard disk, only the arcade version is selling cheaper.

I thought it was time to buy one, since almost all the games come out on xbox 360 nowadays, plus the fact that I really, really, really hate rebooting into Bootcamp Windows XP to play a game. All my Firefox sessions gone, all my open files needing to be closed and saved, closing my iMovie project… yes, my mac never shuts down unless it’s for a reboot for a new upgrade or into Bootcamp.

That’s the real power of the mac – it hardly ever crashes, so you keep everything open and keep working on stuff whenever you feel like it.
🙂
So I got my Xbox 360, I’ve got an Elgato Hybrid USB stick, and that stick is connected to my iMac to record tv shows. Why not connect the xbox to my iMac via the Elgato Hybrid ? I first tried using the normal cinch cables, but the screen quality is really not good at all, and rather shaky to boot.

The trick to it is using a S-Video cable instead, and while it is not a super-crisp HDMI signal, it certainly makes it look better. It look goods enough to play every evening some Assasin’s Creed, in fact.

Without rebooting.

The death of email ?

A thoughtful article in Slate, about the digital generation gap that exists now between those of us who started using computers and learning to use email, and the new youngsters who live in a facebook, texting, instant-messaging world, where email is what snailmail is to us : it takes too long.

Good news though : Facebook is catching on !

Iphone upgrade to 1.1.2 and keypad/sms problems ?

This is a fix for iphones in unsupported countries (at the moment only the UK, France and the USA are supported).

If you upgraded your iphone to firmware 1.1.2 and are suddenly realising that :

  • your phone does not ring when somebody calls it
  • the sms application does not want to start up, but does show the number of new sms on the springboard
  • the iPhone keypad does not want to load

then you need to install the 1.1.2 tweak from Conceited Software called iWorld. You can find this in via the installer.app in the Tweak (1.1.2) section.

This fixes the crash that happens in countries that are not supported by the iPhone.

Took me while to find this, maybe somebody else can be helped with this.
