iPhone wonderfulness

Now that I’ve got my iPhone, I am constantly amazed about it. I’ll list just a few things about that caught my attention.

  1. It’s a phone !
  2. It’s a computer !
  3. It’s a phone and a computer integrated in a marvellous way !

1. It’s a phone.

Of course it’s a phone, that’s why you bought it in the first place. But the UI is soooo well done, it’s scary. It’s scary that it took all this time for someone to come up with a UI that is better than all that windows mobile smartcrap. It’s the smoothness with which your pin login screen appears to unfold when you press the home button. It’s the nice sounds it makes while you work with it. It’s the way your fingers seem to be able to type on those smallish onscreen keys yet you still manage to select the right letter almost all the time. You can read more iphone gushiness from Stephen Fry’s blog.

2. It’s a computer.

It’s a computer in its own right. You can install ssh and the sshd daemon on it, and you can login to it like any other computer. You are using the zsh shell, you can install the latest version of the python scripting language, ruby or Perl. The Apache webserver runs on it, cron is installed, all the Unix command lines work just fine ! Your address book details are kept in sqlite databases, so any tool like python which has integrated sqlite access can access and use them.

3. It’s a phone and a computer.

While the phone baseband modem and the computer are kept separate in the iPhone (at least, that’s what I understand) the results of using the phone are saved to the computer side, so you can for example, install a script that will get all your calls (from an sqlite db) and put those calls in your ical calendar so you can see when you called and who (if the phone number is in the address book).

And it’s all very well integrated ! So well, in fact that you tend to overlook a few problems at first. One of them comes up pretty quickly : there’s no cut-and-paste possible, so quickly picking up for example an rss link from safari and dropping it in a rss reader is not possible. Perhaps a cut and paste solution like iClip would be a solution, where you slide the text or link to a sideboard to store it in, go to the other application and slide it in ?

Other things are missing as well. No GPS, no 3G, no search in your contacts (though you can find most of them fairly quickly).

Still, it’s a beaut, and as Chris Pirillo says: it just put the bar higher for the other phones to compete !

RIP Tous Pret, tous pret. Your sandwiches were the best.

Since 1993 whenever I want a sandwich I go and get one at the Rogier metro station. They are freshly prepared, use good vegetables and their sauces are excellent, I especially liked a martino with the ‘sauce maison’ and their ‘boullette piquante’.

Today, after 14 years of visiting them I arrive to find different people working under the same name. But everything zexcept the nameboard is different. No longer the same faces, no longer the same foods…

I feel a bit sad. Things are not eternal, and certainly people aren’t either, but it came as a bit of a surprise.

I wish them well, wherever they are now.

Ebay – laptop sold !

The aftermath of my Ebay Trubles.

After 8 days, I could file a complaint, and after a further 8 days without hearing anything from the buyer, I could annul the deal and put it up for resale. This time I put it up only for 5 days, ending a Sunday afternoon at 5pm, and it actually got sold for 30 euros more than before. So there is a silver lining to this cloud after all…

Still, it rankled, not hearing anything from the buyer. A simple, “No I’m not interested”, or “I made a mistake” would have helped me a lot.

The current buyer is picking it up this week. We’ll see if things work out, but I have good hopes.

Update : everything went fine.

Ebay trubles

Gatverdamnten !

I’ve sold my old mac powerbook G4 on ebay the 14th of october, and of course the buyer is a friggin noob who has never before bought something, and he doesn’t respond to any mail that I’ve sent him. At all.

This is not the first time either that this happened – I’m getting seriously pissed off, now I have to report a complaint, get it agreed on by ebay, do a resale, probably get a lower deal, and do the whole thing again. You get all this serious bidders, and the last one in is a noob who by chance gets the package and probably never expected to win the auction.

I’m seriously thinking about phoning him up and… oh. Right. Not a real phone number, eh ?

Miljaaar !

Iphone in Belgium.

Kamran pointed me to the fact that here in rainy Belgium you can actually have an iPhone that’ll work with the GSM networks here. All you have to do is buy them from either Ebay or from a shop like Covema for the ridiculous amount of 995 euros !

And in America they cost 399 US.

I think i’ll still be waiting a bit longer…

Boschmans.net logo finally ok

The eagle eyed under you, or those who actually visit my site instead of feedreading it, might have noticed that my logo (the “Boschmans.net” words) overlapped the design of the logo. A black block was jutting out under the words, courtesy of my haste of setting it up.

Well, 2 months later I’ve finally gotten around to it; I’ve used Graphic Convertor to save the jpg as a gif and then set it up with transparancy for the black color.

Heavy sarcasm on >> Wow. At last. I’m really proud of my self << Heavy sarcasm Off.

Another Phone ?

I’m seriously thinking about buying another phone, perhaps a Nokia this time. Lately I’ve been using my Windows Mobile 5 phone more and more, and one of the problems that I have with my Qtek 9100 (HTC Wizard) is that I can easely miss calls. When the phone rings and I press the Accept button, it takes between 2 and 5 seconds before it stops ringing and connects to the caller.

On a side note : if you are looking for WM5 tips, please see my Q-Tips page for some info and links.

This sometimes leaves me walking around shouting “Hello ? Hello ? Can you hear me ? Hello ?” in the phone, and one out of two times the caller has been switched over to voicemail. When I do get them on line, they seem to hear me but I don’t, which means they can hear me shouting “Hello ?” all the time.

Not a very good way to get a conversation started, sounding like a dork shouting in his phone…

So I’m looking at buying a Nokia now. Either a Nokia N76 or a E90 Communicator. From what I’ve read on some forums, these are good phones with a proven OS (Symbian Series 60 revision 3) but slightly less capable application bundles. The N76 really seems to have a good form factor for me (eg like the Razr) but the E90 attracts me cos I want to go full out and carry my mail and internet access with me all the time. Plus it has an integrated gps, making it a full package.

A downside to switching to non-Windows Mobile phones is that I can no longer use all the windows mobile software I’ve bought.

Decisions, decisions… I’ll wait a bit longer, save up some more.

I love sky

You might have already seen this before, it’s been published since a year or so, but it is still soooo good that I want to share this.

Introducing “I love Sky”.

I believe they also produce small 5 to 10 seconds films for inbetween kid shows.

Bioshock – A man chooses

I finally had some more time to play Bioshock, and I finally reached Andrew Ryan, my arch nemesis.

Wow.

All I can say without spoiling it for those of you reading that still haven’t played (probably because you are waiting to become 18 to play this, and if not, why not ?) is that this is one game that has a surprise for you. I’ve played dozens, nay hundreds of games, from the early zx spectrum through to the commodore amiga till now, but I hadn’t foreseen this. Very neat. It’s an eye opener.

No, I’m not telling you. That would spoil the surprise. Seriously, that good.
