Anaconda Forum is Up !

At last, the forum for the Anaconda theme is up and running.

Even better, one of my pet peeves with this otherwise excellent theme was to put my background image on there.

One of the first things that got a response :

Add the image, which you want to display in the header, to wp-content/themes/anaconda/styles/images directory. For example say your image is named headerImage.gif.

Then change the line at 748 in style.css in anaonda theme directory:

#header {background: #666 url(”styles/images/sprites.gif”) repeat-x 0 100%;margin: 0 0 25px;padding: 0 0 8px}
to
#header {background: #666 url(”styles/images/headerImage.gif”) repeat-x;margin: 0 0 25px;padding: 0 0 8px}

Note: Image height should be at least 100px to cover the header area.

As you can see, it sorta works, but it’s not really what I want :
– the image is squashed, or depending if you are changing the repeat-x to no-repeat 0 100% you only see part of it
– the whole line is not filled in
– it’s not centered
– the title of the blog is in the wrong place, for me it should be more to the right.

So I’m going to continue to experiment. I’ve been studying the css code some more, and it seems that most of the things that I want to do are onwards from line 742 in the style.css file.

For example, to change the color/font/size of your sitename, simply adapt the line #header #sitename (the line just below #header). If you want to move your site header name to the right, change the margin from “0 0 0 40px” to “0 0 0 380px”.

Setting up WDS between a Linksys WRT54G and Airport Express

Last monday I bought myself an Apple Airport Express (AX), which I want to set up as a Wireless extender for my current wireless netwerk so that I can connect my KISSDVD/HD recorder (a 200 GB DP-558) to the internet and so I can access the Electronic Program Guide Kiss provides on the internet.

I can very easely set up the AX as a client to join the network, with WPA or even WPA2 security. But this disables the ethernet port on it (I don’t really understand why it disables it though, except to prevent double connections), which is exactly what I need it for.

Thursday night, after a lot of struggling I finally got it to work.

For (my) further reference, here’s how to set up a WDS netwerk between a WRT54G and an Airport Express :
– on my linksys WRT54G, I use dd-wrt 2.3 SP2
– WDS is configured with the wireless mac of the Airport Express in the Linksys and the wireless mac of the linksys (there are at least 3 macs !) in the AX.
– Lazy WDS and Loopback are off
– Using WEP : create the WEP key on your linksys, but on the mac clients you need to enter in the password box NOT THE PASSWORD BUT THE HEX KEY !! You don’t need to do this with WPA, there you can use the password, but since WDS at the moment only accepts WEP encryption…
– With the later firmwares, since at least 2005 you NO LONGER need to input the fricking $ anymore ! I wish people would update their posts, because this is now causing a lot of confusion.

Syphonfilter : Dark Mirror (psp)

My new addition to my growing collection of psp games is Syphonfilter, Dark Mirror for the psp.

And I should really start to sell a few of those titles as it is getting to be a big steaming pile of them, few of which I really play…

Anyway, I’m still on the first section of the game, level 3, but if the quality keeps up (and all the reviews say so) I can heartely recommend it to all those dads who need to de-stress from their day of work (after the children have been put to bed, the kitchen has been cleaned and all that jazz).

The graphics are fluid, detailed, and simply the best I’ve seen on the psp so far. You can snipe, you can sneak, and an itchy trigger finger is quite optional although it can come in handy, so ideal for those of us who aren’t the fastest on the draw. There’s a very good introductory level showing you how to operate Gabe Logan, and if you beat the level time you unlock a weapon.

I like it better than Socom !

I’ve been playing on easy level. Man ! The hard level must be something, the easy level is quite enough for me. But I suppose that could be seen as a way to prolong the playing pleasure.

I remember FarCry, aaaaaah, those were the days. I played it in normal while others played easy, and then after finishing it (without cheats I might proudly add), I restarted it in hard mode, I was sooo crazy about that game. I’m still waiting on the next Crytek game that gives me the same freedom – supposedly there is one coming, sometime this or next year… Guess I’ll need to upgrade my pc.

‘Playable by Dads’ Rating : Pick it up !

Changing…

Les enfants sont comme des pets – tu supporte que ceux que tu fais toi-même…

Recently I was having a family reunion with my two aunts and my mum plus a niece and her husband, and afterwards we went to the local watering hole to have a drink.

There were a few kids playing behind us, playing with the lego in the play-corner, and it surprised me how many times that my family kept watching them and grumbling about the noise, which came as a surprise to me as I hadn’t heard anything excessive. I completely ignored their (happy) noises, they weren’t even fighting, just playing together and all that entales… so all was fine and I tuned it out.

This is actually quite a big change, I remember being incredibly vexed by a baby crying for what seems like hours on the flight to Australia (12 hours Singapore-Sydney with a baby crying at least 4 full hours of them – aaaaaargh!). It was irrational anger, I know, but since then I seemed to be particular sensitive to children making noise. Or so I thought.

I attribute most of the change to Tom and Sam, of course. Having two children yourself, you learn and adapt, you have to.

Still, I’ve changed. This made me think what else has changed, and I think that I’ve become a lot more balanced, less easely perturbed. Perhaps also because my job these last few years involves managing projects and the people working in the project and you learn to deal with all the issues that surround it.

A Mature Me ? Perhaps, but with Tom and Sam around I get plenty of time releasing my ‘inner child’. 🙂

Global Warming Effect (local)

The day before yesterday, 2 October 2006, I plucked my last ripe tomatoes from my garden.

There are still some green tomatoes ripening, as well as some red and green peppers and even some jalapenos, but I’m not hopefull for them. The temperature has dropped 7-10 degrees Celcius overnight !

Incredible really, that begin October I can still pick some ripe tomatoes…

Tips for forget-full people (aka cheese-hole brains)

(I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while, but I keep forgetting it 🙂 )

Have you ever thought of something that you needed to do as soon as you finish your current business, then promptly forgot about it only to recall it again when it is impractical to do it (like, for example late at night while lying in your bed) ?

Do you consistently think of things to do, but can’t seem to get them done ? And you keep reminding yourself and you keep postponing it until 3 months later you wonder what you scribbled on that post-it note ?

Do you have mental anguish and do you berate yourself for not doing all the things that just had to do ?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to one of the above questions, this post is for you !

This is my attempt to write up what I find usefull in dealing with forgetting details/stuff todo/meetings to make/books to read and whatelse in the hustle and bustle that I currently call my life.
I’ve got a variety of methods to deal with these problems, and I use all of them together, depending on where I am and what tools I can use.
Reminding yourself of things todo when they can’t be done at the time

Nothing is so frustrating as thinking of something to do next and then forgetting it when it is time to actually do it and recall it only after any possibility of doing it has gone (ie. in bed late a night). There are a variety of tools and ways to deal with this :

  • Don’t trust your brain to remember it. Write a reminder to yourself the second you think of things todo. Don’t wait, or you’ll lose that thought !
  • Whatever you choose to keep your reminders on, make it a part of your schedule. Even better, think of something you always carry with you and adapt it to fit your needs. For example, keep a pen and piece of paper with you all the time. Alternatively, use a phone with note taking capability or a pda to jot these down. In an emergency, I write things down on my hands (filthy habit, though).
  • If it’s a SIMPLE thing that you can do RIGHT NOW, then do it now. I’ve saved myself hundreds of scribbles and notes and more importantly, mental anguish by doing the thing immediately. It’s actually surprising how much you can procastinate

These 3 points are my guiding principles in trying to keep ontop of all my things-to-do.

Apparently others think about this as well, as I’ve just found this entry on getting impossible things done on Rands in Repose. Excellent food for thought article and a simply excellent site that I am adding to my worthy site list.

Flickr on WordPress

Discovered this site which allows you to have your very own flickr gallery on your wordpress site.
Hmm…. 🙂

Update:  I’ve de-activated the plugin again – seems like it is quite resource-hungry, and in the end what I really want is to show just one single, random, public photo from my Flickr page. Seems there is a smaller, simpler plugin that can do that.

Q-Tips update : added UPX site

I added a link to the site where you can download UPX for Pocket PC – a way to compress and optimize your exe’s and dll’s so that you can gain more memory.

You don’t need a decompressor, that is added in. It’s like a self-executing zip file, but one written specifically for programs on the ppc.
